Piercings [Nov. 30th, 2009|02:48 am]

[bohemiachiquita]
I checked the memories, and it seems as though the last time a question was generally circulated along these lines was in 2002...I figured that it was high time to ask again!

How many of you have genital piercings/have partners with genital piercings? What variety do you have? What has been your experience with them? How have they changed your sex life, either physically or emotionally (if they have at all)?

Thanks!

Painful sex -- preparing for gyno visit [Nov. 30th, 2009|09:50 am]

[mood | scared]

Sex has been painful for me for about the last 18 months -- bf and I haven't had actual sex since February. (Pain is vaginal rather than abdominal, and penetration is impossible; I think it is just clamping shut.) My GP couldn't help beyond the standard "foreplay and lube" advice, which was no help at all. After four months on a waiting list I am finally about to see a gyno in the hospital, and I'm pretty nervous.

I'm not sure what questions I should ask. I'm anxious about being able to describe the problem so a male doctor can understand me. I'm afraid he will be dismissive of the problem (I've had trouble getting doctors to take this seriously in the past). I'm afraid if he can't immediately see what's wrong, he'll give up and I'll be back where I started (this happened once before with another gyno). I'm terrified I'll cry in front of him because this whole situation has me so discouraged and ashamed.

Does anyone have experience with this kind of situation? What are the important questions I should be asking him, and what can I do about these other fears?

It's probably my fault, for going to the pit, but still...

1) Daring me to read you fic as the entirety of the summary (to paraphrase, it was something like: "I dare you to read this, prove to me you're not chicken") isn't going to work. Maybe it's some kind of allusion to the contents of the fic, I dunno, but I'm not going to even check.

2) "a certain ..." - can we stop with that? It's not original, it's not funny, and unless you're going for a bait-and-switch (e.g., "Hinata has always liked a certain blonde", and it turns out the blonde is Ino), it's not clever. Heck, it's not clever even then (besides being useless, since you gave FFN the info on who the main characters are). We all know who you're talking about, so can't you use the name?

3) "deskised". ... Seriously? *brains author with a thrown dictionary*

4) WTF, FFN? Why aren't the status/character/wordcount filters working?

Edit: Nevermind number 4, I forgot I installed noscript a couple days back, and didn't have an exception made for FFN *blushes*

The Fight Against Fascists

26 November 2009
By Boris Kagarlitsky
Leftist, anti-fascist activist Ivan Khutorskoi, 26, was gunned down outside his apartment building on Nov. 16. A few days later, ultraconservative Russian Orthodox priest Daniil Sysoyev was shot and killed in his church. The killing of Khutorskoi was almost certainly organized by one of the underground fascist groups. It remains unclear who wanted to kill Sysoyev, although suspicion is directed at fundamentalist Muslims or perhaps even an enigmatic group of “pagans.”

These two killings share more in common than the fact that they occurred only days apart, involved firearms and were obviously planned in advance. Regardless of the views of the victims, ideological arguments in our society are increasingly being settled through violent means.

We have long ceased to consider the murders of foreign workers and students or of anti-fascists as sensational news, but some time ago the ultraright switched from spontaneous attacks to carrying out well-planned, premeditated strikes.

It would seem that with the January murders of human rights lawyer Stanislav Markelov, Russia crossed a tragic line. Markelov was shot in the center of Moscow, immediately following a press conference and in front of numerous passers-by. Murder has become an open political provocation. That is why, unlike many other crimes, law enforcement agencies were more active in investigating the murder of Markelov, announcing on Nov. 5 that two suspects had been arrested — Nikita Tikhonov and Yevgenia Khasis. The Khutorskoi killing may have been meant to be a signal from the ultraright: Despite the arrests, the terror will continue.

The threshold for political violence has clearly been lowered. It could be that the attack against Sysoyev was to avenge the priest’s inflammatory comments about pagans, Muslims or Darwin’s theory of evolution, but it also could have been intended to destabilize the political environment by provoking a new wave of religious and politically motivated violence.

Although anti-fascists have had scattered street fights with neo-Nazis for several years, no fascist leader or member has ever been killed. But the situation is heating up. On Nov. 17, after hearing of the murder of Khutorskoi, about 70 young, masked anti-fascists attacked the Moscow headquarters of the Young Russia youth group, which they suspect of having ties to ultranationalists.Read more... )

Condescending doctor? [Nov. 30th, 2009|06:18 pm]

[classicalamity]
So, I just went to see a doctor about a possible UTI and/or YI. She didn't really conclude much, as I've been drinking heaps and everything seems to have died down, so a urine test showed nothing, as did a physical exam.

Anyway, thats not really the issue. I told her I was sexually active, and have been with the same partner for close to a year. She asked if we used condoms, and I told her not all the time. I feel a little guilty about this, but I'm on HBC and rarely miss a pill. Neither myself nor by boyfriend (we're both 17) have been in a relationship before this one (well, he has but they were long distance type things that lasted a few weeks). I told the doctor all this and she was a bit condescending, asking how could I know that my boyfriend was a virgin before meeting me, and said something like "if he's not a monk or has been in prison how do you know, unless he's too incompetent and didn't know what to do with it".

I'm a little hurt by what she said, as she basically implied my boyfriend was lying to me. It's also left me feeling kinda shameful/guilty for having sex without a condom. I know I should get tested for STI's, which I'm planning to do this week. Whats the chances of me having something if I've had one sexual partner, who's only slept with me? Or am I just being a stupid, risky teen? Sorry this ended up being a bit long, I just wanted some other opinions on this.

PS: From my understanding, the fanfic OCs seem to be Japanese.
PPS: As great a film (I suppose it is), can we quit referencing 'Paranormal Activity' unless it's set in 2009.

Feel free to keep posting your comments; I think it is healthy to have people with differing opinions commenting on the story, because it shows that our project has caught the attention of a wider base than we had expected. However, I will not respond to any of your comments. I was not even aware of them until my team leader contacted me about your disconcerting communiques, and I don't want to add fuel to your fire. Looking for an article on "female sexual dysfunction" [Nov. 30th, 2009|12:27 am]

[sullenduchess]
HI VP, you guys are going to be my saviours if you can point me in the direction of this article.

I am looking for a post (made fairly recently) about drugs to treat sexual dysfunction in females. The post linked to an article that basically gave the impression of "if you don't have mindblowing porn sex, SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH YOU". The reason I need to find this is I am writing a paper on advertising creating false need blah blah blah and I have this huge section on pharmaceuticals and I would like to include something about the drugs used.

So, why am I asking you to look for this post for me, and not looking for myself?
Well, that is because it only just hit me now that this would be perfect to include, and I am at my boyfriend's house now to use the internet but must go home soon where I do not have internet. I did some googling but did not come across the exact post. If anyone knows the post off the top of their head and can point me in the right direction, it would be great. but no worries if it requires extensive searching-- I can do that on my own later. This would just be a huge help for now as I really need to get this paper done soon and if I can get the article by the morning, I will be in a better place than if I have to take a while and look for it.

I am totally asking VP to do my bidding and I am SO SORRY. I will make it up to you sometime, VP! But, again, if anyone can point me at the post, it would be a lifesaver.

Thanks!

The Foreign Policy Top 100 25 Global Thinkers

From the brains behind Iran's Green Revolution to the economic Cassandra who actually did have a crystal ball, they had the big ideas that shaped our world in 2009. Read on to see the 100 minds that mattered most in the year that was.

25. Joseph Stiglitz

for relentlessly questioning economic dogma.

Economist | Columbia University | New York

When the bottom fell out of the U.S. economy in the winter of 2008, Stiglitz was standing over the wreckage proclaiming: I told you so. The Columbia University and former World Bank economist has long warned that excessive deregulation could spell doom for the U.S. economy. But throughout his career, he has been an equal-opportunity gadfly. Stiglitz won the 2001 Nobel Prize in economics for showing how information asymmetries can cause markets to fail. Best known for arguing that globalization works against poor countries, he more recently has joined the chorus calling for a new reserve currency to replace the U.S. dollar. His iconoclasm has often placed Stiglitz on the outside looking in on the policymaking process. But with the financial crisis calling into question core principles of the economic system, politicians from France's Nicolas Sarkozy to China's Hu Jintao are turning to America's most prominent economic dissident for answers.

Number one probably isn't who you think )

Some of these are like... no, just no. And some are like NO FUCKING WAY (*cough* #13 *cough*). But at least this is a more unique and relevant list than most of the end-of-the-year/end-of-the-decade pap we're being barraged with this month.

I trimmed it to 25 because obviously LJ wouldn't let me C+P 100 bios, but I included some other folks that are known to most of us or relevant to the community.

Someone had posted something about selling Magic cards, and I had a similar question about selling trading cards too. Would anyone recommend selling cards to websites that buy/sell trading cards? I've never done it and always thought how much it would suck if I sent in the cards and never received payment, since I know they want the cards first. Has anyone done it?

Kids are paying it forward [Nov. 29th, 2009|11:09 pm]

Dan McClary made his eighth birthday particularly special — by giving instead of receiving.

His parents Patrick and Maureen helped the Belle River youngster organize a skating bash at the WFCU Centre on Saturday, with more than 40 kids in attendance, where party-goers skated and laughed and enjoyed birthday cake. And where McClary gave up all his presents to needy kids, as part of Sparky’s Toy Drive, a Christmas initiative sponsored by Windsor firefighters.

“If I woke up on Christmas with no presents, I would feel pretty sad,” Dan said about his decision to turn his birthday into a benefit for the less fortunate. “So I wanted to do something.”

Dan actually followed the lead of his big sister Erin, 10, who two years ago started a McClary family tradition. She made her eighth birthday a fundraiser for the Wounded Warriors Fund, after seeing a newspaper article about an injured soldier in Orillia, where the McClarys used to live.

Bush adminstration could've captured terrorist Osama Bin Laden in December 2001: Senate report [Nov. 29th, 2009|11:05 pm]

ontd_political

[mysticlady3]
[mood | tired]

Osama Bin Laden was within military reach when the Bush administration allowed him to disappear into the mountains of Afghanistan rather than pursue him with a massive military force, a new Senate report says.

The report asserts that the failure to get the terrorist leader when he was at his most vulnerable in December 2001 - three months after the 9/11 attacks - led to today's reinvigorated insurgency in Afghanistan.

Sen. John Kerry, Massachusetts senator and 2004 Democratic presidential candidate, requested the report, which came as President Obama prepares to send as many as 30,000 more troops to Afghanistan.

Kerry has long argued the Bush administration botched an opportunity to capture the Al Qaeda leader and his top deputies when they were holed up in the forbidding mountainous area of Tora Bora.

The report calls then-Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and Gen. Tommy Franks, the top military commander at the time, to the carpet and asserts the U.S. had the means to mount a rapid assault on Bin Laden with several thousand troops.

Instead, fewer than 100 commandoes, working with Afghan militias, tried to capitalize on air strikes and track down the ragged band of terrorists.

At the time, Rumsfeld expressed concern over the backlash that could be created by a large U.S. troop presence, and he and others said evidence of Bin Laden's location was inconclusive.

"The vast array of American military power, from sniper teams to the most mobile divisions of the Marine Corps and the Army, was kept on the sidelines," the report states.

On or about Dec. 16, 2001, Bin Laden and bodyguards "walked unmolested out of Tora Bora and disappeared into Pakistan's unregulated tribal area," where he is still believed to be, the report says. With News Wire Services

Mike Huckabee Leaning Against Presidential Run In 2012

WASHINGTON — Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee says he's leaning slightly against running for president in 2012 but says it's far too early to say what he will do.

Huckabee says how the 2010 congressional elections turn out will affect his decision. He also will be looking at whether the Republican Party is willing to unite behind him as a candidate.

Another consideration, Huckabee says, is the status of his weekly TV show on Fox News.

Given those factors, Huckabee says mounting another presidential bid is "less likely rather than more likely" at the moment.

Huckabee finished second in the 2008 race for the GOP nomination. He remains a favorite of evangelical conservatives.

Huckabee appeared on "Fox News Sunday."

Of course this all happened BEFORE this came to light:

Photobucket

I do believe we can call it on November 29, 2009 Mike Huckabee's political career is finished.
